Apart from missing the good snow on every trip? It has to be not skiing the Pyrenees until now. It was epic, both touring where the bears are (sleeping ); and riding down from the Pic Du Midi observatory.

We had another fall of around 35cm of fresh snow last night here in the Grand Tourmalet ski resort (also known as Bareges La Mongie), followed by a blue bird day . Amazing skiing and boarding conditions again on and off the piste in the French Pyrenees where we have not been blighted by lack of snow as they have in the Alps this season. More snow showers and cold temperatures are forecast for the next 10 days! We are having a fun week with Bernice and her Kiwi/Aussi tramping group. We decided to take advantage of the blue skies and head high up into the Neouvielle lake district up behind the chalet today and climb the Pic de Madamete.

A last outing for the snow shoes yesterday (23rd of June!), in the fast melting snows of the Neouvielle nature reserve, A spectacular lake land found just to the South of Bareges village. Neouvielle means old snow in the local Occitan (Neou – or Nebe/Nevee being snow and Vielle meaning old), and at 2500m it is still showing why. We took in a tour through the high lakes which are now mostly defrosted except the odd bright blue berg and admired the view down over the sea off clouds into Bareges valley on the second day of this weeks Discoverer level English language (with a bit of Oc!), guided walking holiday: Read more »
