Getting Here

Mountainbug is based in the High Pyrenees of Southern France, situated South of the cities of Pau and Tarbes, and sharing our valley with the pilgrimage town of Lourdes.

By air
From England, the quickest way to get here is by air. Our closest airport is Tarbes-Lourdes; only 50 minutes transfer from Bareges. We recommend using Ryanair (flights from 1p!) from London Stansted into Tarbes-Lourdes (Winter only at the moment), or Ryanair from Stansted and Bristol into Pau-Pyrenees airport (about 1½ hours drive). Ryanair also fly to Biarritz airport (2½ hours drive) from Stansted, Birmingham and Dublin, and Easyjet fly to Biarritz from Bristol. Alternatively for Toulouse airport (about 2½ hours drive), Easyjet fly from Gatwick and Bristol, and British Airways also fly from Gatwick. Keep an eye on their websites, as new routes are added regularly. Reasonably priced car hire is available at both airports. Ryanair has an association with Hertz rentacar out of Pau airport.

By train
There are good rail links to Lourdes, which is on the TGV mainline in two directions - from Bordeaux via Pau, and from Toulouse via Tarbes. It is convenient to get here from Toulouse airport by train if you do not want to hire a car. SNCF (French railways) operate a connecting coach service up to Bareges, which can be booked along with your train ticket. Another popular option is to take the Eurostar across to Paris, have a look around and enjoy an evening meal, then take the sleeper service down to Lourdes. The SNCF bus service meets the train and you are with us for 9am, getting an extra day out of your holiday in the process.

By car
The most direct route by car from Calais or the Brittany ferry ports is via Bordeaux, and then the national route to Pau and Lourdes. Alternatively, the Spanish ports at Bilbao and Santander are only a few hours drive from our house in Bareges.

Car travel from Pau or Toulouse airport

From Pau airport follow the road towards Pau centre then either take the A64 (toll road) to Tarbes (signed off to Tarbes and Lourdes exit 12) or the national route road (green signs, and just as quick if traffic is normal) signed to Lourdes.

From Toulouse airport follow signs for the A64 direction Bayonne/Tarbes/Lourdes. Stay on the autoroute until Junction 12 then follow signs for Lourdes. *

Once at Lourdes, follow signs for Argeles-Gazost/Gavarnie and then Luz-St. Sauveur. From Luz-St. Sauveur go up the valley to the left following signs for Bareges. The drive usually takes around 1hr40mins from Pau, 2hr30mins from Toulouse.

* Note for GPS/Microsoft Autoroute users: these will direct you via Bagneres de Bigorre and the Col du Tourmalet. DO NOT attempt this road in Winter - the Col du Tourmalet is CLOSED. In Summer the road a very scenic, slow and winding route. If you are trying to get here quickly, please come via LOURDES.

Finding the house

Les Cailloux Bareges.

As you enter Bareges on the main street you will see the big cinema building and main village carpark on the left. On the right hand side of the road, look out for the Hotel Alphee, Sport 2000, then the butcher's shop (Sabathie). There is a small lane just before the butcher's shop, opposite the steps up from the square. Our house is visible from the street about 20m up this lane, on the left. The house is cream in colour with blue shutters. Please knock on the door or just open the door and give us a shout. You can park your car in the turning area below the house to drop off your baggage, but for long-term parking we recommend the central carpark. The house is less than a minute's walk from the car park.

Front door Bareges
*Note for GPS users: although our address puts us on rue Mme. de Maintenon, you will not find us there because we are actually situated just below this road, fronting onto a pedestrian lane.
